CASABLANCA MARKET

URBAN COMPETITION

Casablanca's identity is of complex nature, shaped by a variety of international influences throughout history and without a clear architectural heritage of its own.  The market seeks to celebrate the rich, local background, by establishing an architectural identity rooted in the culture and people of the city. The resulting proposal invests in the community at a multitude of levels throughout construction and use, while simultaneously providing a self-sufficient public hub with a minimal carbon-footprint.  The balanced combination of low-tech and high-tech systems achieve a manageable, affordable, and efficient structure, cognoscente of both the environmental and social considerations of sustainable practice.

The market loggia encapsulates the public-way reinforcing circulation along the street, while simultaneously inviting passerbys into the market-space.  The mezzanine cafe and community vegetable garden overlooks the market, expressing a connection between food, place, and culture.
